Expecting Multiples?

If you're expecting twins or higher-order multiples, your pregnancy journey will involve more frequent and detailed ultrasounds to monitor the health and development of each baby. Multiple pregnancies come with unique considerations, making regular imaging essential for ensuring the well-being of both mother and babies.

What to Expect in Your Ultrasound Schedule

Early Dating & Viability Scan (6–10 Weeks)
Confirms the number of babies, determines whether they share a placenta (chorionicity) or amniotic sac (amnionicity), and assesses initial viability.

First Trimester Anatomy & Nuchal Translucency Scan (12–14 Weeks)
Evaluates fetal development, screens for chromosomal conditions, and assesses placental function.

Second Trimester Morphology Scan
A detailed assessment of each baby’s anatomy, growth, and placenta function.

Growth & Well-Being Scans (From 24 Weeks Onward)
More frequent monitoring of fetal growth, amniotic fluid levels, blood flow, and overall health, especially for monochorionic twins (sharing a placenta) who are at higher risk of complications like Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS).

Cervical Length Monitoring
Multiple pregnancies increase the risk of preterm labor, so cervical length scans may be recommended to assess the risk of early delivery.

Why More Frequent Ultrasounds?

Twins and higher order multiples have a higher risk of complications, including:

  • Growth discordance – One baby growing slower than the other.

  • Placental insufficiency – Affecting nutrient and oxygen supply.

  • Preterm birth risk – Multiples often arrive earlier than singletons.

  • Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) – A condition in monochorionic twins that requires close monitoring.

  • Cervical insufficiency - Increased occurrence of preterm delivery in multiple births requires the monitoring of the cervical length
